Phillip Phillips may have rose to fame with an American Idol win, but he is so over his contract. Upon winning idol Phillips was signed to 19 Entertainment, but he says the company has controlling his career a little too much and wants out of the restrictive contract.
According to THR, Phillips says in a new petition, submitted to the California Labor Commissioner, that he was forced to perform for free and didn’t even know the name of his album until it was released! “I am very grateful for the opportunities provided to me through appearing on American Idol,” says Phillips. “The value that the fans and the show have given to my career is not lost on me. However, I have not felt that I have been free to conduct my career in a way that I am comfortable with. I look forward to being able to make my own choices about my career and to being able to make great music and play it for my fans.”
When Phillips does any endorsements 19 can get as much as a 40 percent cut. And since 19 Entertainment is not only his management and but his record company there were never any intentions to negotiate a new deal since umm…they are the smae company looking at their own profits and not the talent per se!
A spokesperson for 19 Entertainment tells The Hollywood Reporter, “We’re very proud of everything we’ve accomplished together with Phillip, working closely to help nurture his extraordinary talent and advance his career. We have always acted in the best interest of Phillip. We will vigorously defend ourselves from any baseless claims to the contrary and from any attempt to interfere with our rights and relationships.”
