Last year word got around that Ryan Seacrest was positioned to take over for Matt Lauer on the Today Show. Lauer has been ‘the news’ for almost a year now since the departure of Ann Curry on The Today Show, who many believed influenced her outing and he even contemplated leaving the show even jumping to ABC to do Good Morning America. “Lauer learned of the leak [about Seacrest] while being forced to stand outside the security gate at the White House Christmas party because Ann Curry had forgotten her driver’s license.” Lauer hoped to host again with former Today show co-host Katie Couric and possibly do a talk show together on ABC, but money got in the way and Lauer used his leverage to get a bigger payday on NBC. Lauer signed a new contarct with NBC at a reported $25 million/year and a 4 day work week.
