Former U.S. Women’s soccer star Abby Wambach was arrested for driving under the influence in Portland last night. According to TMZ, police say Wambach was pulled over after allegedly running a red light and then failing a field sobriety testing and also a breathalyzer. Portland PD say Wambach “polite and cooperative” during her arrest. She retired last year after winning the World Cup, she was released on her own recognizance.
Abby took to Facebook to apologize for her actions, “Last night I was arrested for DUII in Portland after dinner at a friend’s house. Those that know me, know that I have always demanded excellence from myself. I have let myself down and others down. I take full responsibility for my actions. This is all on me. I promise that I will do whatever it takes to ensure that my horrible mistake is never repeated. I am so sorry to my family, friends, fans and those that look to follow a better example.”
Wambach is two-time Olympic gold medalist and 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup champion.
