Brians Williamsn may have been suspended from NBC for allegedly lying about an incident over his during his 2003 assignment in Iraq, but in a new report now claims that Williams was blaming a tumor for the oversight.

In a new Vanity Fair investigation, shortly following the  Stars and Stripes story in which a reporter planned  to release an article dismissing Williams’ Iraq account where he says his helicopter was hit during the war.

The head of NBC DeborahTurness struggled with Williams actions following the story and his inability to explain what happened.“He couldn’t say the words ‘I lied,’ ” recalls one NBC insider said of the incident. “We could not force his mouth to form the words ‘I lied.’ He couldn’t explain what had happened. [He said,] ‘Did something happen to [my] head? Maybe I had a brain tumor, or something in my head?’ He just didn’t know. We just didn’t know. We had no clear sense what had happened. We got the best [apology] we could get.”

Williams publicly apologized for the incident, but has yet to address the controversy.
