Celebrity Chef Nigella Lawson took the stand on Wednesday in the fraud trial against her former assistants, Elisabetta and Francesca Grillo and said her ex-husband threatened to destroy her if she did not clear his name after he was photographed holding her by her neck.

Lawson said in court, “He said to me at the start that if I didn’t go back to him and clear his name he would destroy me” and added that Saatchi may have spread “false allegations of drug use” against her.”I have been put on trial here … and in the world’s press,” she said.

The Grillo sisters are accused of abusing credit card access to purchase private items for themselves, which was really meant to be used for  household expenses. The sisters purchased expensive clothes from Yves St Laurent, Dolce & Gabbana and Chanel, accessories and stays at high-end hotels. Lawson goes on to say one of the sisters, Elisabetta Grillo — known to the family as Lisa had been her ‘rock’ after the death of her first husband, John Diamond but felt betrayed by her behavior. “I loved Lisa. My children loved Lisa. She came to me at a very difficult time and she was a rock.  I would have done anything for her.” Lawson added, “It’s very difficult when you find out that someone you have loved and trusted could behave in that way. In my heart of hearts I do not believe Lisa to be a bad person. But I believe her to have not a very strong moral compass.”

Lawson did admit to taking cocaine a couple of times in her life but is not a habitual user like claimed in the media. “I have never been a drug addict. I’ve never been a habitual user… There are two times in my life when I have used cocaine.”
