Ellen Degeneres had a super hard time after she came out of the closet on her show, Ellen she couldn’t find work and was nearly broke, but Oprah suffered a backlash too. On the shoe Oprah played Ellen’s therapist on the episode when Ellen came out. “I did it because she asked me to do it and I wanted to support her,” Winfrey told THR. “It didn’t occur to me that there would be a backlash.” But then the insults came and quickly turned racial. ‘It always turns to race. I got all of the, ‘N—–, go back to Africa. Who do you think you are?” Oprah adds she never experienced something like that before.
Oprah goes on to say that Ellen probably has more success now that she came out all those years ago…people love her honesty! “Being able to be free — literally — and to express herself in a way that she can be 100 percent truthful with the audience has allowed them to fall in love with her. Honest-to-God truth: I don’t believe she would have been as successful as she has become had she not come out.”
