Katy Perry leads the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards nominations in 9 categories ( she deserves it!)

MTV today announced the nominees for this year’s fourteen VMA categories.  Katy Perry leads the way with an incredible nine VMA nominations which include “Video of the Year” and “Best Female Video,” for her explosive hit, “Firework,” “Best Pop Video” for Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.), and “Best Special Effects” for her futuristic chart-topping hit and this year’s current top selling digital song in the U.S., “E.T.” featuring Kanye West.

“I have nine nominations!” Perry shouted when she heard about her noms from MTV News‘ Sway during Wednesday’s night’s (July 20) on-air nominations event. “Nine? I thought that was a typo or something! Oh my god, really? That’s the most nominations I’ve ever gotten for anything,” she added excitedly.

Adele and Kanye West tied with seven nominations each.  The “2011 MTV Video Music Awards” on Sunday, August 28 at 9PM (ET/PT).
