Fresh Prince of Bel-Air star James Avery passed after complications from an open-heart surgery late Tuesday. According to CNN the popular actor, who played Uncle Phil, always trying to keep Will Smith in place on Fresh Prince, died at age 68 (other media outlets say 65) after undergoing open-heart surgery at the beginning of November according to his manager.
“Fresh Prince” co-star Alfonso Ribeiro tweeted, “I’m deeply saddened to say that James Avery has passed away. He was a second father to me. I will miss him greatly.”
Avery was raised in Atlantic City, New Jersey by a single mother. He served in the military during the Vietnam War before moving on to theater and eventually TV and movies.
