A few days ago, Burger King released a commercial with Mary J. Blige. The problem…Mary’s fans became extremely upset because of the nature of the commercial and its racial stereotypes against African Americans!  Burger King has confirmed that the commercial was released unfinished and will be releasing the final version soon.
“I agreed to be a part of a fun and creative campaign that was supposed to feature a dream sequence,” Blige tells Us Weekly in a statement of the spot, which was slammed by critics and subsequently yanked from the airwaves after going viral earlier this week.
Furthers Blige: “Unfortunately, that’s not what was happening in that clip, so I understand my fans being upset by what they saw. But, if you’re a Mary fan, you have to know I would never allow an unfinished spot like the one you saw go out.”
The fast food chain — who also count Steven Tyler, David Beckham and Salma Hayek among their celeb spokespeople — confirms that the commercial wasn’t meant to air in the unfinished state viewers saw it in.
Hoping to put the finalized version of the spot on air “soon,” the chain is also offering a mea culpa to Blige and her fans for jumping the gun.
“The Mary J. Blige commercial was released prematurely before all of the licensing and final approvals were obtained,” they said in a statement. “We would like to apologize to Mary J. and all of her fans for airing an ad that was not final. We know how important Mary J. is to her fans, and we are currently in the process of finalizing the commercial.”
