Selena Gomez may be in the media right now for her relationship with Justin Bieber, but she had a great message for her fans when she attended We Day California conference yesterday. Selena talked about the pressure of Hollywood and blasting past critics who said she couldn’t have her own show as a child.
“I’m surrounded by people who are supposed to guide me and some of them have and others haven’t. They pressure me, there’s so much pressure. ‘You gotta be sexy, you gotta be cute, you gotta be nice, you gotta be all these things.'” She continued, crying a little, “They tell me what to wear, how to look, what I should say, how I should be. Until recently I had given into that pressure, I lost sight of who I was. I listened to opinions of people and I tried to change who I am because I thought others would accept me for it. And I realized I don’t know how to be anything but myself.”
She added, “When I was 11, I had a casting director tell me I wasn’t strong enough to carry my own show. It does more than knock the wind out of you, it crushes you when people try to tell you you’re not good enough.” She landed her own show just two years later. She’s a great inspiration!
According to the We Day website, “We Act is a full-year engagement program and support system for youth, schools, individuals, families and companies to turn inspiration into action. We Act goes hand-in-hand with We Day. It’s a highly measurable, highly impactful service learning program!”
On a side note Seth Rogen was also a speaker at the conference and was even snapped in a group photo with Selena…did he just call Justin Bieber obnoxious!
