TV Chef Sandra Lee revealed she has breast cancer this morning on Good Morning America. Lee learned about her diagnosis while at a photo shoot for People Magazine’s Most Beautiful issue. “And I walked off the set, and 20 minutes later my doctor called and told me I had breast cancer. I didn’t even cry, I was stunned … You know, and that’s just how fast life turns. It turns on a dime.”
Lee who can be seen on her show, “Semi-Homemade Cooking with Sandra Lee,” and on the arm of her longtime partner New York’s Gov. Andrew Cuomo, says he plans to take time off to be by her side. After having a lumpectomy, she was advised by doctors to have a mastectomy.
“When the lumpectomy was done, they did not have clean margins. And so I went back to my radiologist. And so I said, ‘OK. If I’m going to have a mastectomy, am I supposed to just get one done?’ Both the radiologist and the doctor said, ‘You’re a ticking time bomb.’ And they both said, ‘You need — I would just get them both done.”
Robin Roberts asked how Cuomo took the news, “Well, he was — after I called my sister, he was the next call. I think he was as stunned as I was, and added he was ,”extremely supportive.” Lee’s cancer was caught in the early stages. “It beats up your body, and it beats you up emotionally. And it — I wasn’t going let it rob me from one day of happiness,” she said.
