Oscar Pistorius’ sentence will be appealed by South African prosecutors. Pistorius received a culpable homicide conviction in September in the death of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day 2013.
Judge Thokozile Masipa allowed the appeal of the sentence but added that the state cannot appeal his five-year sentence separately and must pay for part of Pistorius’ court fees. If the appeal is successful the Supreme Court of Appeals could hand Pistorius a bigger sentence of at least 15 years.
Masipa said that the Supreme Court of Appeals could find she did not interpret the principles of dolus eventualis ( murder without intent) and may have made an error in her finding and subsequent sentence.
Pistorius maintains he believed an intruder was in his home, locked in a bathroom when he shot the locked door killing his girlfriend Reeva.
