Kate del Castillo is fuming mad at Sean Penn, who she says used her connections to gain access to El Chapo. Del Castillo was under the impression that Penn was going to join her as she met El Chapo to write a life story about the Mexican drug lord. Kate had been in communication with El Chapo for years using Twitter and then secret phones. She did not know of Penn’s plan to release an article with Rolling Stone Magazine.
“I don’t think he was ever interested in the movie,” del Castillo told Diane Sawyer in a new 20/20 interview. “I’m hurt but again I’m angry at myself because I believe in people. I didn’t know Sean Penn.”
She denies she is romantically involved with El Chapo. “Oh, my God, no, not at all. It’s just so not like that, and that’s one of the frustrations I have. That I wish I could have every single text that I sent with me, you know, to tell everybody how out of context they are. There was no reason why we wouldn’t be friendly.” She did admit he might like the character she plays telenovela character Teresa Mendoza.
“He’s not being even romantic. I just think he likes me. I don’t think it was necessarily me, Kate del Castillo. I think it was — probably a little bit of both, as I said. It was more that he was– probably had a crush on Teresa Mendoza in a way because he loved that series so much … But I think it was a little bit of both too because he said some beautiful things about my family.” The Mexican authorities are looking at del Castillo’s interactions with El Chapo over money laundering issues.
